History of Silver Clay

Silver Clay was invented in Japan in the 1990s by metallurgist Masaki Morikawa. For many, it has been a revelation which has allowed fine jewellery to be made simply. Without the need for years of training or multiple sets of expensive tools

Silver clay is a material, made up of fine silver particles (usually recycled from the photographic industry, X-rays, electronic devices etc), an organic plant based binder and water.

The binder gives the material a texture and suppleness just like traditional clay, so your silver-clay jewellery can be worked by hand or with standard metal clay tools. The clay can be moulded, rolled, textured and shaped.

When heated in a kiln, the binder burns away and the metal fuses together into the shape you moulded, leaving you with the desired result – a beautifully unique piece of handmade metal clay jewellery.
